Lets face it...not too many people enjoy the thought of April 15th coming around year after year.  The list of taxes seems endless i.e. goods and services sales tax, property tax, individual tax, tobacco tax, alcohol tax, gas tax and capital gains taxes.  Not too often does Congress make it easy for most Americans when it comes to taxes.  However, on May 7, 1997, the capital gains tax on the sale of a home became a thing of the past for virtually all homeowners as a result of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.  What this means is that you are eligible for a tax exemption for up to $500,000 in home-sale profits on a joint return, $250,000 for single filers.  For more detail, read the article entitled "Taxes When You Sell Your Home" below.
